As a credit union committed to financial literacy and the well-being of our members, we understand the importance of early planning for your children's future. College can be a significant financial and academic undertaking, and preparing your kids early can give them a head start towards success. Here are some valuable tips to help you do just that:

1. Open a College Savings Account:

Start saving for college as early as possible. Motivate your child to make weekly or bi-weekly contributions. Even small contributions over time can accumulate significantly.

2. Encourage Academic Excellence:

Instill a love of learning in your kids from a young age. Encourage them to participate in extracurricular activities that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.

3. Explore College Options Early:

Visit college campuses with your kids to give them a glimpse of different institutions and academic programs. Attend college fairs and speak to admission counselors to gather information and narrow down their options.

4. Develop Good Study Habits:

Help your kids establish effective study habits, such as creating a dedicated study space, setting regular study times, and using active learning techniques.

5. Promote Financial Literacy:

Teach your kids about money management, budgeting, and saving. Encourage them to participate in youth savings programs or open their own savings accounts. Those aged under 18 will receive $20 deposit from ACU after making their first deposit of $5 or more.

6. Consider Dual Enrollment:

Explore dual enrollment programs that allow high school students to earn college credits while still in high school. This can give them a head start on their college coursework and potentially save on tuition costs.

7. Plan for College Expenses:

Estimate the potential costs of college, including tuition, fees, room and board, and other expenses. Research different financing options, such as scholarships, grants, and student loans. Aeroquip Credit Union's John Park III Scholarship will be open for applications beginning in February 2025.

8. Discuss College Expectations:

Talk to your kids about the academic and social challenges they may face in college. Encourage them to develop realistic expectations and strategies for coping with stress and setbacks.

9. Encourage Independence:

As your kids approach college age, foster their independence and decision-making skills. Encourage them to take on responsibilities and manage their own schedules.

10. Provide Ongoing Support:

Throughout the college application and enrollment process, offer your kids guidance and support. Attend college visits with them, help them navigate financial aid forms, and be there for them during the transition to college life.

By following these tips, you can help your kids prepare for college early and set them on the path to success. Remember, college planning is an ongoing journey that requires collaboration and open communication between parents and children.

Aeroquip Credit Union is committed to our future generation and will be once again accepting applications for our John Park III Scholarship beginning in February 2025. For more information on eligibility requirements and rules by clicking below.
